The Gift of Fellowship
I loved playing sports growing up. Putting on my Little League uniform and taking the field with my classmates were a very special thrill. Throughout my school years, into college and even graduate school, I participated in various athletic endeavors. I was never a star player, never won any outstanding awards, but I loved playing. Even after becoming a Pastor I played on many teams – basketball, softball, volleyball. It was fun, challenging and bonding.
Over the past 20 plus years I have really enjoyed being a part of another team. Although not an athletic venture, FCFI has awarded me some great team experiences.
1. I have been blessed with a great understanding of the work that the Lord is doing in so many other places. Sometimes we can become like Elijah and think we’re all alone. Fellowship saves us from that false idea.
2. To feel a part of something that is larger than your own effort is extremely rewarding. It’s an exponential dynamic – the sum is greater than its individual parts! I love to be a part of something that goes all over the world, even though by myself I could never have that kind of impact!
3. Friendship is a lasting addition to my life – and yours. Even though I might only see some of my FCFI brothers and sisters once or twice a year, these relationships have become so strengthening to me. I look forward to these times of sharing life together with those who are of a like mind and commitment.
Fellowship is a true gift from God. Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his dynamic book, Life Together, shared many powerful insights about Fellowship. Being a man who died at the age of 39 in a German prison because of his resistance to the Nazi Regime, Bonhoeffer understood the gift and privilege of Fellowship and the great pain of its loss. Here are some quotes from this martyr:
“The Church is the Church only when it exists for others…not dominating but helping and serving.”
“It is grace, nothing but grace, that we are allowed to live in community with Christian brethren.”
“The physical presence of other Christians is a source of incomparable joy and strength to the believer.”
“We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet really not small) gifts.”
FCFI is a gift from God to me. It’s a gift because of all of you. I look forward to strengthening and expanding our Team in the year ahead. Let’s live our lives together in the Fellowship of Jesus Christ.
